This practical and immersive course covers everything from the history and restoration of Galway Hookers to rigging, seamanship, and navigation. You’ll gain the essential skills to become part of a sailing crew while exploring the rich maritime heritage of these iconic boats.

What You’ll Learn 

Course Content

This course blends theory and practical experience, culminating in an on-the-water session aboard a motorboat. 

History of the Galway Hooker –

Sponsoring a scholarship for someone and help shape their future.

Traditional Hooker Customs –

Heritage, traditions and cultural importance. 

Nautical Theory –

Sea terms, boat components and general knowledge. 

Navigation and Meteorology –

Understanding tides, weather and charts. 

Ropework and Sea Log Books –

Hands-on skills in knot tying and logging .

Rigging and Sail Handling –

Learn the art of setting up and controlling sails.

Seamanship and Helmsmanship –

Core duties and sailing techniques.

Personal Safety and Emergency Procedures –

Fire precautions & man-overboard drills

All sessions must be attended:

  • Session 1: Feb 10th, 18:30–21:00 (Classroom-Based)
  • Session 2: Feb 17th, 18:30–21:00 (Practical Workshop)
  • Session 3: Feb 21st, 09:00–13:00 (On-the-Water Training)

First Session Location:

Galway Bay Seafoods, New Docks, Galway, Ireland. H91 NFH

Note: The first session is classroom-based. Please dress for outdoor activities. Further guidance will be provided for subsequent sessions.
