When we set out to build the new digital home for the Galway Hooker Sailing Club, we knew that a standard template wouldn’t suffice; the site needed to carry the weight and history of the vessels themselves. Good design is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about storytelling. To truly honour the craftsmanship of our fleet, we looked beyond the screen and turned to the traditional materials of these iconic boats for our inspiration.
Hues of Sail, Hull and Sea
A key design choice for the new website is the deliberate use of a palette directly inspired by the Galway Hooker. The site predominantly features a classic Rustic Hooker Red—a vibrant, weathered hue drawn from the traditional red sails synonymous with these majestic vessels, which were historically bark-stained to withstand the harsh coastal elements. This is grounded by a Bold Pitch Black, taken from the imposing finish of the fleet’s timber hulls.
These traditional tones are set against a Deep Atlantic Navy and a Murky Sea Green—hues that do more than just mirror the waters of Galway Bay; they directly reference the colours that mark our fleet’s boundary with the sea. Completed by Crisp White Accents representing the spray of the Atlantic, the design brings the spirit of the Galway Hooker to the digital screen.
An Identity Anchored in Tradition
At the heart of our new digital identity is our logo—a symbol that anchors the club’s identity. Rather than modernising the logo, we retained the traditional image of the boat. With a front-view angle, this purposely sets us apart from other logos that use a side-view angle of the Galway Hooker; thus keeping the look unique to us. We brought new life to the design with a refreshed palette, refined styling, and the addition of the club’s establishment date, all while honouring the Gaelic form of our name, Club Seoltóireachta Húicéir na Gallimhe, with a new traditional Irish-styled font, customised for our club. The colour scheme is kept simple but dynamic, allowing for interchangeable use across merchandise, signage, and promotional material while ensuring our identity remains easily recognisable and allowing us to truly create our brand.

To describe our club in one tagline: we are where Tradition meets Adventure. We purposely styled our website to keep heritage and tradition at heart and be modern by design. This site marries the storied heritage of the Galway Hooker with a modern, adventure-filled digital experience. It is more than just a window to the past; it is a gateway for the next generation of sailors to explore, engage, and join the journey.
